Thirty-Seven Years Before the Cave

Romania wrote the rules for the science of caves before it had properly seen its own. The institute came first. The map, much later.

On 26 April 1920, in Cluj, biologist Emil Racoviță founded, by law signed by King Ferdinand I, the world's first institute of speleology — a body dedicated solely to the science of subterranean life. At that point, Transylvania held barely a few dozen genuinely known caves. Peștera Vântului, the cave that would become Romania's longest, had not yet been found; thirty-seven years still stood between the institute and that discovery. And the country's actual lower limit — how deep its explorable bedrock really goes — stayed unknown for another century after that. Romania didn't build the science of caves to answer a question it already had. It built the science before it knew what it would find.

An Institute Before the Map

The first systematic record of Transylvanian caves dates to 1767, when contemporary documents counted six. By 1884, researchers had reached roughly eighty-one. These were modest figures, gathered one generation at a time by amateur explorers and local naturalists. Nothing about the pace of those discoveries announced a scientific discipline in its own right — and yet, in the thick of that same era of fragmentary knowledge, Emil Racoviță moved the seat of "Biospeologica," the international research collection he had founded thirteen years earlier at the Arago Laboratory in France, into a Romanian institute with its own legal standing. It was an odd wager: to legislate a science into being before you had enough data to fill a shelf.

The institute existed for thirty-seven years before its speleologists found the cave that would become the country's longest. It existed for more than a century before anyone learned where the country's explorable depth actually ends.

The rest of the century slowly closed the gap between the institution and the ground beneath it. Romania's first caving club was founded only in 1966, in Cluj — forty-six years after the institute. The Romanian Federation of Speleology came later still, in 1994. Today, a hundred and eight clubs, with more than ten thousand members, keep a national register that has passed twelve thousand six hundred catalogued caves. Every one of them has been added to a map the institute had, as an institution, commissioned decades before that map genuinely existed.

Romania's deepest known cave reaches −801.5 metres — a team of forty-six speleologists from five countries set the figure in September 2024, after diving through a flooded gallery. The world's tallest building, the Burj Khalifa, stands 828 metres. The gap between them is twenty-six and a half metres — less than the height of the building the reader of these lines probably works in.

The Labyrinth Found in 1957

Peștera Vântului, in the Pădurea Craiului Mountains, was discovered by engineer Bagameri Béla exactly thirty-seven years after Racoviță's institute was founded. It was not a discovery that wrapped up quickly. Surveying it continued, with steadily better equipment, for nearly half a century: by the end of 1989 the measured galleries had passed forty and a half kilometres; by the early 2000s, resurveying had pushed past forty-seven; today, the confirmed length stands at fifty-two kilometres — longer than a full marathon, run underground. It remains Romania's longest cave. The public can see seven hundred and thirty metres of it, on a fitted-out trail, always accompanied by the club that holds it in custody; the rest of the galleries exist only on speleologists' maps.

The difference between Peștera Vântului and Avenul de sub Vârful Grind is the difference between the two questions every cave asks: how far does it reach, and how deep does it go. Romania only answered both in recent decades — and is still answering. The depth record above is from 2024. It isn't an old figure someone is quoting from memory. It's the figure reached last year.

The Man Who Mapped the Ice, Then the Dark

Before founding an institute devoted to the world beneath the ground, Emil Racoviță had already mapped the most isolated world above it. Between 1897 and 1899, as the naturalist of the Belgian expedition led by Adrien de Gerlache, he was aboard the ship Belgica when it became trapped in Antarctic pack ice — the first crew in history forced to winter over in the frozen waters of Antarctica. He spent months in near-total polar darkness, as far from any existing map as any undiscovered Carpathian cave would still be, two decades later.

In 1907, at the Arago Laboratory, he published "Essai sur les problèmes biospéologiques" and founded the international collection "Biospeologica." The term "biospeology" wasn't his — French zoologist Armand Viré had proposed it three years earlier. What Racoviță did was give it systematic substance: turn a label into a discipline, with its own method and its own questions, and, thirteen years later, an institute officially carrying his name. He died in 1947, director of the institute to his last day, never learning where the depth he had put on the map actually ended.

A note on method

The institute's founding date (26 April 1920, Cluj) and its status as the world's first institute of speleology are documented in the archives of the "Emil Racoviță" Institute of Speleology and confirmed by press coverage from 2020 and 2023 marking the centenary. The historical cave counts (six in 1767, roughly eighty-one in 1884) and the current register (over twelve thousand six hundred caves, a hundred and eight clubs, more than ten thousand members) come from the summary material published by the Romanian Federation of Speleology. The length of Peștera Vântului (fifty-two kilometres today, with historical milestones of forty and a half kilometres in 1989 and past forty-seven in the early 2000s) is the figure publicly cited by the club that holds it in custody. The −801.5-metre depth for Avenul de sub Vârful Grind, in the Piatra Craiului massif, is the record set in September 2024 by an international team of forty-six speleologists; the comparison heights used alongside it (the Eiffel Tower, Taipei 101, the Burj Khalifa, the Statue of Liberty, Kyiv's Arsenalna metro station) are each structure's official, widely published figures. The biographical dates of the Belgica expedition (1897–1899) and the 1907 publication of Racoviță's biospeological essay, including the note that the term "biospeology" had already been proposed by Armand Viré, are those recorded in the standard biographies of the scientist.
