Romania's Folk Calendar: Mărțișor, Dragobete, and Sânziene
1 March wears the red-white string (UNESCO), 24 February is the modern love day (old dates in early March), 24 June weaves foretelling Sânziene crowns, 20 December kills the winter pig, Christmas to New Year sings house to house, Easter follows the church calendar. Six nodes, every date sourced.

Dragobete (thin)
Modern date 24 February (MDA2 2010: religious feast + Finding of the Head of St John); older dictionaries give 1 March (Șăineanu 1929: love-water day) or 3 March (Scriban 1939, DER: the birds' betrothal). The date itself is layered, not monolithic.

Dragobete
Old layer: love water, the birds' betrothal, no work that day (old dictionaries). Modern layer: sweethearts, fairs, concerts (MNTR). How exactly, who still keeps it — no ethnographic page caught, labeled thin, not invented.
Old: the South (Scriban), Olt (DER); modern: fairs in Bucharest. Where it runs strongest we do not judge (thin).

Egg painting (încondeiere: the MNTR collection holds some 8,000 pieces incl. eggs; the Zahacinschi gift of some 3,000); pască cheese cake (DEX: Orthodox Easter fare); the Florii fair with its proverb (MNTR). The midnight Resurrection service without a church page, unwritten (thin).

Sânziene
Girls pick white/yellow sânziene, weave crowns and belts: worn by day, dried by night for remedies and cosmetics; crowns on the roof foretell luck, marriage, death (Nicolau, Ghidul sărbătorilor, Humanitas 1998, via MNTR). Healing herbs (pre-Rusalii nipped by the Iele); no bathing that day. Elsewhere Drăgaică: a chosen bride, unwed three years. Bonfires: no museum caught, unwritten (fenced, not thin).

Dragobete and Valentine's: use the comparison, skip the equals sign. Three grades: see, half, don't — the Ignat household and the private table plainly don't.
The comparison trap: Dragobete ≠ Romanian Valentine's (as identity)
Dragobete is often called the Romanian Valentine's — a comparison, not an identity. Differences: the layered date (24 February modern vs 1/3 March old), a core of birds' betrothal and love water rather than a saint's legend; modern sweethearts are an urban layer (the MNTR fairs prove it), separate from 14 February. Use the comparison; skip the equals sign.
