Dracula: Six Places, Myth vs Record
In short: Stoker never visited Romania; the novel never names “Bran”; the name has an archived Order-of-the-Dragon derivation (Vlad II joins in 1431 → Draculea), while the “devil” gloss sits in a Wilkinson 1820 footnote (checked against the scan) — whether Stoker took it from there awaits the Rosenbach manuscripts; until then, no thesis.

Reading contract: every panel has three fixed rows — in the novel / in the record / go or skip — each with a confidence label (primary text · contemporary record · later scholarship · institutional claim · tourism claim · contested tradition). “Skip” is always phrased as fit (“skip if…”), never as fact.

The six places
1. Bran — the attributed castle (tourism claim)
In the novel (primary text): the novel contains no “Bran” — 19 substring hits, all “branch”. Harker crosses the Borgo Pass (Ch. 1, 5 May journal: “we were entering on the Borgo Pass”).
In the record (scholarship): attribution in three phases — 1960s: Western tourists, “in the absence of any ‘real’ castle, invented one — at Bran Castle” (Light 2007, peer-reviewed); 1970s–80s: reluctant state tolerance (the 1972 book, the 1973 ONT “Dracula: Legend and Truth” tour; socialist-era English materials never call it “Dracula's Castle”); post-1990: private commercialization under continued state ambivalence (the 2001 Sighisoara Dracula Park = first state exploitation). The historic Vlad owned nothing in Transylvania; Bran was never his residence (Curta).
Go? (tourism + institutional): the castle is worth it; fares and hours at castele-de-vizitat (reachable 2026-09-17). As “Dracula's Castle” it disappoints; as a 14th-century pass fortress it doesn't. Bran's site dates Vlad's rule “1456–1462 and 1467” — shown beside the museum chronology (Arges to 1476; Targoviste: November 1476), unreconciled.
2. Poenari — likely extended by Vlad (museum + chronicle)
In the novel (primary text): absent.
In the record (museum): the Arges County Museum: “most probably raised by the first Basarabs”, a 15th-century extension “phase attributed to Vlad Tepes”; the quoted Cantacuzino chronicle: “Vlad voda Tepes. Acesta au facut cetatea de la Poenari şi au facut sfânta mănastire ot Sneagov”.
Go? (official + volatility): CJ Arges notice of 18 May 2026: open daily 10:00–18:00, last ascent 17:00 (museum page matches). History: ~30 cracked steps in March (freeze-thaw), the 1 August remediation deadline lapsed — re-check CJ notices before going. The climb (1480 steps) is unmeasured and stays out of the day-trip formula.
3. Sighisoara — probable birthplace (museum: probabil)
In the novel (primary text): absent.
In the record (museum): Targoviste National Museum: “born at Sighisoara, probably in 1431”; reigns Sept–Nov 1448, 1456–1462, Nov 1476. Town logistics at orase-medievale (reachable 2026-09-17).
Go? (stable): the UNESCO citadel alone is worth it; from Bucharest the round trip exceeds 8h — multi-day or overnight only.
4. Targoviste — the documented court (archive + museum)
In the novel (primary text): absent.
In the record (archive + museum): the court raised by Mircea the Elder, lived in by Vlad, who “raised the defence tower now called Chindia”; the 1476 reoccupation and death before year-end (museum). Eagles (after Ciobanu/Moisescu): under Vlad Dracul then Dracula, Targoviste became the de facto capital (scholarship via thesis).
Go? (stable): mandatory for history. ~95 min from OTP (re-measured 2026-09-17); from Bucharest add navigation time (unmeasured separately, outside the formula).
5. Snagov — the burial tradition, disputed (contested tradition)
In the novel (primary text): absent.
In the record (thesis + church, each on its own): Eagles (UCL thesis, after Florescu & McNally 1989): the 1931 dig — altar grave with animal bones and sherds; pronaos headless high-status skeleton with a Dragon-ring reading; finds lost by the museum — “circumstantial and anecdotal”. The church claims only the “tombstone” before the altar (stone, not burial), plus Vlad's 1456 works and the 1933–1940 digs.
Go? (contested tradition): as legend, yes; as certainty, no. Pairs with Targoviste (88 min).
6. Borgo Pass / Tihuta hotel — a hotel built on literary geography (academic + status gate)
In the novel (primary text): Harker enters the pass on 5 May; the carriage meets him at the pass — an anchor of the fiction's geography.
In the record (academic): GeoReview/USV: the county decided a Stoker-replica hotel in 1976; completed in 1983 as “Tihuta”; renamed “Dracula Hotel-Castel” after 1990. Bistrita's Coroana de Aur, the second contemporary build (Hovi after Light 2012, one line).
Go? (status gate): in September 2026 aggregators list autumn rooms (a signal, no official site) — check first; the router never gives it a plain “go”. 205 min from Cluj (6.8h round trip, long day).
What Stoker read (three people, each traced to the original or declared unverified)
- Wilkinson (1820) — the “devil” gloss, checked against the scan
- Footnote on p. 19: “Dracula in the Wallachian language means Devil…” (archive.org OCR confronted). Whether Stoker took it from there: the manuscripts sit at the Rosenbach (119 leaves, institutional guide public); uptake unverified — no thesis.
- Gerard (1888) — nosferatu, checked against Gutenberg
- “The Land Beyond the Forest”: “nosferatu, or vampire, in which every Roumanian peasant believes…” (2 hits). The 1885 essay, unverified separately, is omitted.
- Boner (1865) — the Terzburg castle illustration, checked against the contents; Stoker's use, unverified
- “Transylvania: Its Products and Its People”: the illustration list holds “CASTLE OF TERZBURG” (Terzburg = German Bran; the text has no “Bran”). Four tracks: listed illustration (verified) / seen by Stoker (unverified) / the 1897 first-edition image (unverified) / the Bran page quote, which conflates “suspected of using the illustration” with “engraving printed in the first edition” (institutional claim, exhibited, not adopted).
