Two minutes. A city under cloud.

Bucharest prepared the total solar eclipse as a national experiment. On the morning itself, stratocumulus hid totality from the ground. Partial-phase plates and five photographs of the corona made from an aircraft document the observation above the city.

The story, briefly

Weeks of preparation for two minutes of totality.

For weeks, the press printed maps, times, warnings and explanations. Schools prepared thermometers, wind vanes and smoked glass. Observatories prepared Zeiss refractors, polarisers, filters, photo-elements and plates. In Bucharest, the cloud deck blocked observation at the decisive interval.

CONTEMPORARY FACT

Bucharest was inside the totality zone.

The northern boundary of totality ran near Turnu Severin, Pitești, Târgoviște, Ploiești, Mizil and Brăila. In the period’s decimal-minute notation, Bucharest had first contact at 08:43.2, maximum at 09:54.8 and last contact at 11:12.0.

SCIENTIFIC REPORT

Cloud limited the ground observation.

The photoelectric report records cloudiness from 8/10 to 10/10 and stratocumulus. The apparatus was ready, but cloud blocked optical observation of totality at Bucharest Observatory.

AIRBORNE OBSERVATION

The aircraft climbed above the deck.

An IL-18 flew at roughly 2,200–2,500 m. The team continued the observation above the cloud and obtained five photographs of the corona.

Two minutes

The press turned the eclipse into a table of times.

The period press published the place, times and filters needed for observation. Scientific reports use more precise contacts. Both time scales appear here.

The sources describe two situations at the cloud line. On the ground, cloud blocked optical observation during totality. Above it, an aircraft obtained five photographs of the corona.

The shadow path

From the Atlantic to Siberia, the shadow had one narrow corridor.

In Romania, the shadow crossed southern Oltenia, the Bucharest region and Dobrogea, then moved over the Black Sea. The press described a Zimnicea–Constanța central line; NASA calculates a path about 258 km wide near Romania.

In Bucharest, the eclipse was total. Cloud hid totality from the ground. Observation continued through measurements, the partial phase and the aircraft.

I searched the OCR corpus of the Ovid Densusianu County Library, the Romanian Digital Library, institutional pages from the Observatory and Academy, the AGERPRES archive and modern astronomical calculations. The sources found and gaps in coverage are listed below. Undigitised, private, military and unindexed Romanian archives are outside the checked corpus.

How to read the labels

“Direct contemporary” means a newspaper, magazine or report from around the event. “Scientific record” means a later technical publication. “Modern calculation” is an astronomical cross-check. “Lead” indicates a source that helps locate an object; the scan or primary document remains necessary for a claim based on it.
