The geography of Romanian cinema

The Map of Romanian Film

One hundred and twenty-five titles and places mapped across Romanian cinema: from the Buftea studio lot to the villages, castles, apartment blocks and cities where Romanian cinema has put its camera. Every marker on the map carries a source.

The map reaches 34 of Romania's 42 tracked administrative units: 41 counties and the municipality of Bucharest.

The route follows how Romanian cinema has used real places, from the Buftea studio lot to the Danube Delta and contemporary Cluj.

Where it was actually shot

Coloured counties hosted at least one verified shoot. Filter by era and pick a marker or a county for details.

Real outlines, from geoBoundaries data (World Bank / ANCPI, CC BY 4.0), simplified for clarity; it is not a precise cadastral map. Large and small points are interactive: the large point marks a production's main place, while small points lead to other places named in the source; when they overlap, the cards open one below the other.

17 of the 34 tracked units appear in both eras. Another six appear only in studio-era films, and eleven only after 1990. The two eras overlap in part, but the route widens visibly once production leaves the studio system.

From one lot to an entire country

Until 1989, almost every Romanian film passed, at least for its interiors, through Buftea Studios, a single complex on the edge of Bucharest, built on Gheorghe Gheorghiu-Dej's order and conceived as a "Hollywood of the Eastern Bloc." From 1957 onward, over 500 films were made there; the peak year was 1980, with 32 films. Even foreign directors such as Orson Welles, René Clair, Robert Siodmak and Jean Negulescu shot co-productions on the Buftea lots.

The production archive shows how the lot and the landscape worked together. The Mill of Good Luck (1956) went out to Hărman and Sânpetru, while The Forest of the Hanged (1964) used locations in Brașov and Cluj, with interiors at Buftea. The Dacians linked Buftea to Sarmizegetusa, Stâna de Vale, Bucegi and Hârșova; The Last Crusade reached 37 places, from Peleș, Bran and Râșnov to Călugăreni, Șelimbăr and Tismana.

In the same period, Stone Wedding and The Gold Spirit were shot at Roșia Montană, in Alba County, while Forest Berries was shot in Covasna County. Stephen the Great – Vaslui 1475 and Pintea add further chains of fortresses, villages and towns. Vlad Țepeș (1979) needed exteriors in four different counties (Hunedoara, Brașov, Argeș and Constanța) for a single historical epic produced within the studio system. And The Moromete Family (1987) moved from Siliștea Gumești, the real home village of the character in Marin Preda's novel, to Talpa, a neighbouring village, because antennas and power lines had changed the landscape.

After 1990, location shooting became more visible. The camera reached a real apartment in Sebastian for Sieranevada, the edge of Cluj for Graduation, and Sky Tower and Piața Unirii in Bucharest for Toni Erdmann. Corneliu Porumboiu shot his debut, 12:08 East of Bucharest, in Vaslui, his own hometown, while The Treasure chose Islaz, the site where the 1848 Revolution was proclaimed. Elsewhere the route widens: Morgen remains tied to Salonta, The Miracle of Tekir links Buzău to the coast, and Eastern Business gathered 57 locations around Bucharest and Buzău.

Audiences will recognise many of these titles at once: The Reenactment was shot entirely in Sinaia, Stuff and Dough links Constanța to Bucharest, The Death of Mr Lazarescu crosses the capital’s hospitals, and Police, Adjective stays in Vaslui too. Next Stop Paradise keeps Bucharest as its 1990s terrain, The High Schoolers returns to the current Alexandru Ioan Cuza High School, and Uncle Marin, the Billionaire moves from the InterContinental to Olimp.

The map also keeps pace with today's box office. #Selfie was shot in Constanța, and Teambuilding at Padina. Christmas comedies form their own small circuit: 5Gang: Another Kind of Christmas links Bucharest to Ploiești, Snow, Tea and Love was shot at Jilava and Rahova, and Christmas with Ramon at Oradea and Sâniob. Other recent hits stay in Bucharest (Ramon, Miami Bici, Miami Bici 2, The Marriage, The Yellow Tie and The Race) or reach Cluj, with Death on Vacation and The Neighbour. The Camp and Buzz House: The Movie were both shot at Snagov, Romina, VTM at Costinești, and Two More Lottery Tickets follows a route from Bucharest to Limanu.

Over the last decade, the map continues to work with recognisable places. The History of Love uses Dâncu village and several Cluj locations; One Step Behind the Seraphim links Focșani to churches around Sibiu and a Bucharest set; R.M.N. built a house and shot in Rimetea and the surrounding forests. The Fixer reaches Bistrița, Best Intentions moves through Miercurea Ciuc and Bucharest, and The Moromete Family 3 returns to Talpa, Sinaia, Bucharest and Golești. Freedom moves through Sibiu, Brăila and Bucharest, Three Kilometres to the End of the World through Sfântu Gheorghe and Dunavăț, and Kontinental ’25 through Cluj, Florești and Buscat.

The clearest case remains California Dreamin' (Endless). The real event happened at Pielești, in Dolj County, where a stationmaster stopped a NATO train in 1999. The film moves it to the fictional village of Căpâlnița, while the shoot took place at Comana, in Giurgiu County, and at Constanța. Three different geographies for one story: where the event happened, where the fiction was set, and where the camera actually was, each marked distinctly on the map.

A geography that leaves the lot

Together, these places show how Romanian cinema spread from a production centre into villages, cities and landscapes.

Administrative units on the map

The films documented here reach 34 of Romania's 42 tracked administrative units. Aferim! remains at regional level, through its Dobrogea landscapes.

Seven decades of filming

From The Mill of Good Luck and the great historical productions to Kontinental ’25, the map follows the shift from the studio system to location shooting.

Places spanning the eras

Seventeen units appear in both studio-era films and productions made after 1990; another six appear only in the first period, and eleven only in the second.

How to read the map

The map uses places named explicitly in the sources linked to each title. One hundred and twenty-four markers identify at least one county or the municipality of Bucharest; Aferim! remains a regional reference for Dobrogea and appears as a dotted zone. Roșia Montană is mapped in Alba County, while story locations remain separate from shooting places.
