Place of the day: guess where in Romania you are, from the relief alone

Every day you see the relief around one place in Romania, with no name and no map. You drop a pin on the map of the country in at most six guesses. Each miss brings a clue: a wider view, the altitude, the kind of place, the region, the county.

          How to play

          • You see the relief of a place in Romania from above, like a map of hills and valleys, with moving light. It has no names, roads or towns.
          • Drop the pin on the map of the country with a click or a finger, and move it with another click or the arrow keys. You can zoom the map to place it more exactly.
          • You have six guesses. Each shows the distance in kilometres and the direction towards the real place. You found it if you are within 15 km of it and closer to it than to any other place in the game.
          • Each miss brings a clue: a wider view, the altitude, the kind of place (monastery, lake, fortress), the region, the county and, on the last guess, the first letter of the name.
          • The place is the same for everyone and changes at midnight, Romanian time. You can also play earlier days from the archive.
          • Your streak grows with every day you find the place of the day. Every seven days you earn a shield that saves one missed day. Archive places do not change the streak.
          • Points come from the places you find: the fewer the guesses, the more points. They raise your level and unlock achievements. Your progress stays on this device only.

          Where the data comes from

          • Relief: Terrarium elevations (Mapzen: SRTM and other public datasets), from AWS Open Data.
          • County borders: Romania’s counties from 1930 to today, 2026 edition.
          • Place coordinates are those of the projects on this site, checked against Nominatim (OpenStreetMap) to within 4 km; each place’s story is in the linked projects shown after the result.
