Carpathian Bears: The Libearty Sanctuary and Field Ethics
Where to see bears, and how to do it right? The sanctuary takes guided tours only: the classic runs 1 hr 15 min, adults from 95 lei, under-5s barred; in the wild follow the park code: food on the branch, see the bear first; the country holds 10,419–12,770 brown bears (preliminary 2025 genetics); lure questions are declined.
Tours and tariffs come from the sanctuary site (18.09.2026), the code from the national park, the figure from the ministry. Aggregator hours and prices are never taken.
Three sentences to keep: the sanctuary is no zoo, visits are educational, tickets go on sale 10 days ahead; in the wild sightings stay unpromised — the rules guard safety, not encounters; on luring? Declined, the reason in the refusal box.

The Libearty card: guided only, official only
Zărnești, Brașov county, run by the Millions of Friends Association. In 2005 the association + World Animal Protection + Zărnești Town Hall turned 69 hectares of forest into the sanctuary, for 49 years; the first two rescued bears, Cristi and Lidia, arrived the same year. The operator calls it the world's largest brown bear sanctuary: the header says 130+ bears, the mission page says 180+ rescued in total (both figures as written, unreconciled). The operator's three 'nots': not a zoo, not an amusement park, not an entertainment attraction. Visits Tuesday–Sunday, Mondays closed for maintenance, plus Christmas Day, Easter Day, New Year's Day. Guided tours only (Romanian/English), fixed seasonal times, limited places, tickets 10 days ahead. Under-5s barred (safety + bear welfare), age proof required. Phone +40 268 471 202.

House rules: you are a guest in their forest
The operator's words: abused animals live here, you enter their forest; the visit is first of all educational. Photos without flash, no smoking, respect the animals. Under-5s barred (see above). Personal photo/video camera +50 lei (except professional photo tours); documentary filming €200/hour. Disabilities free (valid certificate); students over 25 get no discount; children and students show age proof. Prices stay the same all year, only the day differs: adult 95/100, child (5–18) 50/55, student (18–24) 75/80 lei; weekday public holidays at weekend prices.

One: food never in the tent (bears follow smells) — hang it on branches, at least 2 m up, away from the trunk. Two: see the bear before it sees you: tracks, scat, feeding signs (overturned stones and logs, scattered anthills, diggings). The refusal box: on lures, this site declines
'How do I call a bear out of the forest?' 'What do I feed it?' — declined. Two reasons: the park rules teach only how not to attract bears (food on the branch); the reverse is not written here. And the sanctuary exists precisely because people treated bears as toys. To see bears: take the guided tour (above), or try your luck on marked trails — in the wild no encounter is promised, ever.

The MMAP press release (10.04.2025, preliminary results): 24,000+ samples from 25 counties, genetic analysis at the INCDS Marin Drăcea lab, 95% confidence: Romania holds 10,419–12,770 brown bears. The minister: the first solid scientific basis; before, visual and indirect estimates, sometimes controversial. Mind 'preliminary': a stage, not the full stop. No unsourced totals, no 'Europe's most' epithets — the figure travels with this document only.

Brașov–Zărnești 34.6 km / ~39 min (Nominatim + OSRM driving, 18.09.2026). The classic at 9:45 or 11:15, 1 hr 15 min over 2 km: take the 11:15, leave Brașov at 9:30, back at the car before 12:30. Tickets online 10 days ahead; leave under-5s behind; camera +50 lei. Afternoon in Brașov (the city at the site's medieval-cities guide).

Morning classic (as above), afternoon marked trails practicing 'see first': tracks, scat, feeding signs, no detours, rubbish with you. Zărnești–Bran 9.2 km / ~14 min (same measurement), on the way, not a detour — Bran is not this page's subject. A wild bear? Unpromised: seen is luck, unseen is normal; the rules guard safety, not encounters.
