Five kilometres between opposite destinies
In the Hășmaș Mountains, within walking distance of the same limestone ridge, two of Romania largest rivers are born: the Mureș and the Olt. Their springs lie less than five kilometres apart as the crow flies. Yet their hydrological journeys could not be more opposite.
The Mureș heads west at an initial elevation of 850 metres, crossing the whole of Transylvania over 761 kilometres inside the country, exiting into the Pannonian Plain to join the Tisza at Szeged in Hungary. Its water makes a vast sweep through the western continent before the Tisza brings it back into the Danube at Titel in Serbia.
The Olt begins at an altitude of 1,440 metres, turns south, drains the Brașov Basin, cuts through the Southern Carpathians via the dramatic gorges of Turnu Roșu and Cozia, and empties directly into the Danube at Islaz after a 615-kilometre descent. The two raindrops, parted by a single mountain ridge, only meet again in the Danube after hundreds of kilometres of separate travel.
Born 5.2 km apart. The Mureș leaves toward the Tisza at 850 m; the Olt plunges into the southern gorges at 1,440 m.
The southern flank feeds the Argeș down to Oltenița, while the northern face drops steeply toward the Sibiu Basin and the Olt.

The rivers that never meet the Danube
Of Romania total surface area of 238,397 square kilometres, 97.8% (233,150 km²) drains into the Danube. Exactly 2.2% (5,247 km²) shares a completely distinct hydrological destiny: the rivers of the eastern Dobrogea plateau.
Watercourses in this sector, such as the Casimcea (69 km), Taița (57 km), Telița (48 km), Slava (38 km), and Hamangia (18 km), spring from the country oldest geological strata (the Măcin Mountains and Casimcea Green Schists, dating back over 600 million years) and flow eastward directly into coastal lagoons like Razim-Sinoie or coastal limans like Tașaul and Babadag.
These coastal streams represent the sole region in Romania where raindrops reach the Black Sea without ever passing through the Danube or its delta branches.

Sources and hydrological precision
All metrics on river lengths, catchment surface areas, source elevations, confluence points, and tributary hierarchies are derived from the Atlas of the Water Cadastre of Romania (Ministry of Environment, National Institute of Hydrology and Water Management, and National Administration of Romanian Waters).
Average gradients are calculated as the ratio of total vertical descent (in metres) to stream length (in kilometres), expressed in parts per thousand (‰). For cross-border rivers (Tisza, Prut, Mureș, Crasna), both internal Romanian mileage and total stream length are explicitly recorded.
The total reference surface area of Romania used across calculations is 238,397 km², according to official figures from the National Agency for Cadastre and Land Registration and the National Institute of Statistics.
