Travel warnings

On 30 September 2026, the UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office still advised against all travel to Transnistria. The latest readable Romanian Foreign Ministry advisory, accessed on 19 September, recommended avoiding journeys in or through the region and said Romanian consular staff could not provide protection there; the page listed an update from July 2026. On 30 September, both the advisory page and the ministry homepage were unavailable.

Entry and safety

The FCDO advice describes passport checks, migration cards, questions at checkpoints and the possibility of refused entry. Its safety pages cover the local currency, foreign-card limits, photography restrictions and regional risks. The Romanian advisory also covered consular support and where to exchange money.

Transport and places to visit

Moldova Travel lists rail links to Chișinău and places to visit in the region. PMR-Tours sells tours from Chișinău; it is an operator, not an independent source of travel warnings. A report on the Chișinău–Tiraspol tourist train describes occasional services since September 2024; we did not verify a regular service. This page gives no fixed fares or timetable.

Political context

The OSCE Mission to Moldova, established in 1993, describes the Chișinău–Tiraspol negotiations and its mandate to support a settlement based on Moldova's sovereignty and territorial integrity, with a special status for Transnistria.

What to check

Check official warnings, visa rules and transport departures again before travelling. Descriptions of transport and tours do not establish that a trip is safe or feasible.

Visa rules

Moldova’s Foreign Ministry list, checked on 24 October 2026, includes Romania among visa-exempt nationalities. Requirements depend on nationality and travel document; check the permitted length of stay separately. Visa-free entry to Moldova does not guarantee passage through Transnistria’s checkpoints. Next review of this information: 24 November 2026, or earlier if official rules change.
