Documents

• Passport: the UK advises three months' validity beyond departure and a blank page; Romania advises three months at entry. Check the rule for your passport and itinerary.
• Visa: Moldova’s entry requirements depend on your nationality and travel document. Romanian citizens are exempt from visas under Moldova’s Foreign Ministry list. Check the official rules for your nationality, including the permitted length of stay and required documents. Visa-free entry to Moldova does not guarantee passage through Transnistria’s de facto checkpoints.

Money

• The Transnistrian ruble is used locally; paying in other currencies is treated as illegal. Check where to exchange money before travelling (Romanian MFA).
• Local ATMs do not accept foreign cards (FCDO). Carry cash and keep it in separate places.
• Keep your card in sight when paying to reduce fraud risk (FCDO advice for Moldova as a whole).

Connectivity and safety

• Ask your carrier about roaming and local SIM cards. Download offline maps; the FCDO warns of possible power cuts.
• Do not photograph military or government sites, including airports and power stations; the FCDO warns you could be detained or arrested.
• Romania has consular offices in Chișinău, Bălți, Cahul and Ungheni, but cannot provide protection in Transnistria (Romanian MFA).

Tour or solo

• If travelling without a guide, check entry requirements and transport separately; entry can be refused.
• Tours with transfers and guides are available from Chișinău. Confirm arrangements with the operator.
• Going independently or joining a tour does not change the official warnings. Check them before travelling.

1. Chișinău side only

There is no official border between Moldova and Transnistria, only de-facto checkpoints (FCDO). Crossings to Ukraine are closed (FCDO): no Ukraine-side routing.

2. Passport checked, not stamped

FCDO: passports are controlled but not stamped. The Moldovan side registers your entry date automatically; overstays are punished severely (including expulsion).

3. Two migration cards, keep one

FCDO: on entry you fill in two migration cards for the authorities; keep one to show on exit.

4. Questions likely, refusal possible

FCDO: the authorities may ask purpose, length and accommodation; they may also deny entry.

5. Over 10 hours: give address (single source)

Operator page: stays over 10 hours require giving your address at the checkpoint. Single source — re-verify before travel.

UK FCDO (Still current 30 Sep 2026; updated 10 Dec 2025)

FCDO advises against all travel to Transnistria. … Transnistria is outside the control of the Moldovan government.

FCDO's ability to offer support is extremely limited and will be more limited if there is military action on or near the Moldova-Ukraine border.

Some Asian and Afro-Caribbean visitors have reported being verbally abused or assaulted. Visitors also report police harassment.

Travel warnings advise against visiting

On 30 September 2026 the FCDO still advised against all travel. The latest readable Romanian advisory, accessed on 19 September, recommended avoiding the region; the ministry's page was unavailable on 30 September.

No rescue if it goes wrong

FCDO: extremely limited support, less if military action. Romanian MAE: consular assistance and protection cannot be ensured for nationals in difficulty.

Entry can be refused at checkpoints

No official border but checkpoints: cards, questions, possible refusal. Over 10 hours: address (operator, single source).

War next door, crossings shut

FCDO: widespread military activity in Ukraine, 2022 explosions, crossings shut; plus the “extremism” catch-all (including protest).

Rubles only

FCDO: the Transnistrian ruble is the currency; paying in anything else is treated as illegal by the authorities.

No exchange outside, no foreign cards

FCDO: outside the region rubles cannot be exchanged either way; ATMs reject non-Transnistrian bank cards.

Exchange at banks and licensed offices only

MAE Romania: in Moldova exchange only at banks or licensed offices.

Cards: general warning

FCDO (all Moldova, not region-specific): beware credit-card and ATM fraud; keep the card in sight when paying.

Tiraspol: Soviet statues and monuments

moldova.travel: in Tiraspol there is “no shortage of Soviet statues, monuments and celebrations”. It recommends the Chișinău day tour (transport + paperwork).

Bender–Tighina fortress

The portal: Bender holds Tighina Fortress (both names), Ottoman-built in 1538; King Charles XII sheltered here in 1709.

No timetable snapshot here: verify the return live on the day. Plan B: overnight in Chișinău.

FCDO says entry may be denied. Plan B is Chișinău itself.

Dniester / Nistru

Same river: Dniester in English (portal, operator), Nistru in Romanian (cf. MAE's “nistreană”).

Bender / Tighina

Both names on first mention: the portal writes “Bender and Tighina Fortresses”, cross-referenced.
