Which people from Romania the world reads about on Wikipedia, language by language

Among Wikipedia's articles about people from Romania, the most read in English is about an actor born in Constanța, on the Black Sea coast; in German, about a singer born in Brașov; in Hungarian and in Polish, each about a different king born in Transylvania; in Romanian, about the poet Eminescu. “From Romania” here means citizens of Romania or of the states that came before it, or people born inside its present borders, whatever their ethnicity.

The wall of portraits below has one tile for each of the 43 editions of Wikipedia that were followed, from English to Latvian. The face on a tile is the person from Romania whose article was opened most often in that edition, from July 2015 to September 2026. Pick a language to see its top ten.

Different people on the wall: 17

Wikipedia has a separate edition for each language, and each edition counts its own page views. “From Romania” covers two cases here, both decided from Wikidata, the database behind Wikipedia: the person held the citizenship of Romania or of one of the states that came before it, or was born at a place inside its present borders. The rule says nothing about anyone's language or descent. That is why the wall also carries Stephen Báthory, a king of Poland born in Șimleu Silvaniei, in north-western Romania, and Walter Zenga, a goalkeeper born in Milan, a Romanian citizen. The criterion that put a person on the list is written beside each name, and the list can be narrowed to one criterion.

Two people turn up almost everywhere. Vlad the Impaler is first in 14 editions and among the first three in 35 editions. Nicolae Ceaușescu is first in nine editions (Japanese, Chinese, Persian, Korean, Vietnamese, Finnish, Norwegian, Danish and Bengali) and among the first three in 27 editions. One is the 15th-century prince of Wallachia whose byname, Dracula, Bram Stoker gave to his vampire; the other is the communist leader executed in December 1989.

Counting those two, the wall has 17 names for 43 languages. In English and in French the most-read article is about Sebastian Stan, an actor born in Constanța; in German, about Peter Maffay, a singer born in Brașov, in Transylvania; in Italian, about Walter Zenga. In Hungarian, Slovak and Slovene it is Matthias Corvinus, king of Hungary, born in Cluj; in Polish, Lithuanian and Latvian, Stephen Báthory. In Serbian it is Dositej Obradović, a scholar born in Ciacova, in the Banat; in Ukrainian, the writer Olha Kobylianska, born in Gura Humorului, in Bukovina; in Armenian, Vazgen I, head of the Armenian Church from 1955 to 1994, born in Bucharest; in Georgian, Anthim the Iberian, the scholar from Georgia who became metropolitan of Wallachia. In Catalan it is Marcela Topor, a journalist born in Vaslui, in eastern Romania; in Swedish, Alice Teodorescu Måwe, a politician born in Bucharest; in Hebrew, Rudolf Kastner, a lawyer and journalist born in Cluj; in Azerbaijani, the singer Inna, born in Mangalia, on the Black Sea; in Estonian, the novelist Liviu Rebreanu. In Romanian it is Mihai Eminescu, the national poet.

Switch the wall to “Read more here than elsewhere” and Vlad the Impaler and Nicolae Ceaușescu are gone. For each of an edition's top ten people, the article's share of the edition's page views is compared with the median of the other editions that have the article. This view brings up 34 names. In Hungarian the article about Ferenc Kölcsey, who wrote the words of Hungary's national anthem and was born in Săuca, is read 1,654 times as much as the median of the other editions. In Turkish it is İbrahim Müteferrika, who set up the first Muslim-run printing press in the Ottoman Empire, born in Cluj; in Greek, Andreas Embirikos, a poet born in Brăila, on the Danube. In four editions, Chinese among them, none of the top ten reaches one and a half times the median of the other editions.

What each language reads

The list below opens on the English edition. The large number to the right of each name is how many of every million page views of the edition went to that person's article, which lets a huge edition such as English be compared with a small one such as Latvian. Under it are the total views and, where it applies, the ratio to the median of the other editions.

In English, Sebastian Stan takes 25.5 of every million views, just ahead of Vlad the Impaler with 24.2. The tennis player Simona Halep ranks 4; 1.4 million views of hers came in July 2019 alone, the month she won Wimbledon.

Months that stood out

  • July 2019: Simona Halep, 1.4 million views, 34 times the article's monthly median
  • August 2016: Nadia Comăneci, 830,000 views, 19 times the article's monthly median
  • January 2018: Simona Halep, 660,000 views, 16 times the article's monthly median

The criterion changes the answer. With the list narrowed to citizenship, the first four names drop out of the Hungarian edition, all of them born before 1918 in the west of present-day Romania, and Nicolae Ceaușescu moves into first place; Stephen Báthory drops out of the Polish one. With the list narrowed to birthplace, Walter Zenga drops out of the Italian edition and Vlad the Impaler becomes first.

One person, in every language

The same person holds very different ranks from one edition to the next. The playwright Eugène Ionesco ranks 5 in French and 155 in Romanian. The philosopher Emil Cioran ranks 4 in Arabic and 91 in Romanian. Gheorghe Hagi, the footballer, is second in Turkish, the language of the country where he played for and managed Galatasaray, and ranks 18 in Romanian.

Pick a name. The bars show, for each edition that has an article about the person, the views per million and the rank among the 1,271 people from Romania whose complete series were downloaded (see the method).

The months when a name surged

An edition's list changes little from one year to the next, but in a single month an article can draw several times, sometimes dozens or hundreds of times, its usual views. Below are eight peak months, each beside an event that took place then: a final, a death, a series, an election round. The data shows the month and the day, not the reason; the event is set beside it because it happened then.

  1. Călin Georgescu

    Română Romanian · November 2024 · 1.9M

    20152026

The first round of Romania's presidential election was held on 24 November 2024, and Călin Georgescu came first. His article in Romanian drew 1.9 million views that month, more than half of them on polling day and the day after. On 6 December the Constitutional Court annulled the entire electoral process.

  2. Mihai Eminescu

    Română Romanian · January 2021 · 364K

    20152026

Every January the article climbs far above its median of 32,000 views a month: 15 January is the poet's birthday and, since 2011, Romania's National Culture Day. In January 2021 it had 364,000 views.

  3. Michael I of Romania

    Română Romanian · December 2017 · 464K

    20152026

King Michael, Romania's last king, died on 5 December 2017 in Switzerland and was buried on 16 December at Curtea de Argeș, the royal burial place. The day of the funeral brought the most views; the whole month added up to 464,000 views, 43 times the article's monthly median.

  4. Simona Halep

    English · July 2019 · 1.4M

    20152026

On 13 July 2019 Simona Halep won the Wimbledon final, 6–2, 6–2, against Serena Williams. In English her article had 1.4 million views that month, 34 times its median, and more than half of them came on the day of the final.

  5. Sebastian Stan

    English · April 2021 · 977K

    20152026

“The Falcon and the Winter Soldier”, in which Sebastian Stan plays Bucky Barnes, ran on Disney+ from 19 March to 23 April 2021. April 2021 is the month in which his article in English was opened most often: 977,000 views.

  6. Nadia Comăneci

    English · August 2016 · 830K

    20152026

At each of the three Summer Olympics in this period the article about the gymnast Nadia Comăneci rose: August 2016 (Rio de Janeiro), July and August 2021 (Tokyo), July and August 2024 (Paris). In English the peak is August 2016, with 830,000 views.

  7. Vlad the Impaler

    Türkçe Turkish · January 2023 · 185K

    20152026

The second season of Netflix's “Rise of Empires: Ottoman”, about the war between Sultan Mehmed II and Vlad the Impaler, was released on 29 December 2022. In Turkish, January 2023 is the month in which the article was opened most often: 185,000 views, 15 times the median. The same month is the peak in English too.

  8. Elisa Leonida Zamfirescu

    Tiếng Việt Vietnamese · November 2018 · 29K

    20152026

On 10 November 2018 Google gave the engineer Elisa Leonida Zamfirescu a Doodle, the drawing on its search page, 131 years after her birth; the Doodle was shown in Vietnam too. In Vietnamese her article had 29,000 views that month, almost all of them on that day, and very few before or after. More than two thirds came from desktop computers rather than phones, a far higher share than in the other months here.

The places and the events

The same count was made for places and for events. Places are articles with coordinates inside Romania's borders; events are those Wikidata locates in Romania: battles, treaties, elections, revolts, disasters. For places, complete series were downloaded only for the 145 articles that were among an edition's twenty most-viewed places in September 2026; for events, for all 114 left after the corrections. The lists below follow the edition chosen above.

Transylvania is the first place in 23 editions and Bucharest, the capital, in 18 editions; in Turkish the first is the Principality of Wallachia, in Serbian the city of Timișoara. Among events, the Revolution of December 1989 is first in 23 editions; in Russian the first is the trial of Nicolae and Elena Ceaușescu, and in Romanian the presidential election of 2024. Other editions read their own history that happened here: Hebrew, the Iași pogrom of 1941; Greek, the Treaty of Bucharest of 1913 and the Wallachian uprising of 1821; Bulgarian, the earthquake of 1977; Hungarian, the Peace of Szatmár of 1711; Turkish, the battle of Karánsebes of 1788 and the Treaty of Jassy of 1792.

What a page view is, and is not

A page view is a request for a page that the server answered successfully. The Wikimedia Foundation counts requests, not people: someone who opens the article three times leaves three views, and a view does not say whether the page was read to the end or closed after a second.

The numbers here cover only the class Wikimedia calls “user”: requests that do not declare themselves as robots and that its filters did not judge to be automated. The filter for automated traffic has run since April 2020; until then, any robot that did not declare itself fell into the same class as readers. Wikimedia itself writes that the tagging is “far from perfect” and that some automated traffic is still labelled “user”.

An edition belongs to a language, not to a country. English is spoken on every continent and Romanian in the Republic of Moldova as well; a view does not say which country it came from. Nothing here shows what a nation thinks of Romania; it shows which articles the readers of one edition opened.

Wikimedia counts the views of a redirect (another title that leads to the same article) separately. For the names in the lists they have been added to the article's own when the redirect's title is another name of the same person or place.

How the count was made

Who is included. The list starts from Wikidata, read on 4 October 2026: 41,208 people who either held the citizenship of Romania or of one of the states that came before it (Wallachia, the Principality of Moldavia, the United Principalities, the Kingdom of Romania, the Romanian People's Republic, the Socialist Republic of Romania), or were born at a place inside the present borders. Of them, 26,067 are in by citizenship, 33,575 by birthplace and 18,434 by both; 35,270 have an article in at least one Wikipedia edition.

Birthplace is tested on the map: only places that Wikidata lists under Romania are considered, and their coordinates must fall inside the outline of Romania (Natural Earth, 1:10 million). The outline is simplified, so a place up to three kilometres outside it also counts; a place that Wikidata also lists under another present-day country does not. Chernivtsi, in Ukraine, and Soroca, in Moldova, stay outside; someone born there is included only if they held Romanian citizenship. The birthplace cannot be a country or a region: for 1,067 people Wikidata gives as the place of birth only “Romania”, in most cases, or an area such as Transylvania, the Banat or the Carpathians, and those statements were not counted. Wikidata's “country of citizenship” is meant for the state that recognises a person as its citizen; for people who lived before modern citizenship, editors enter there the state whose subjects they were. The rule takes no account of the year in which citizenship was acquired.

Corrections. Wikidata has mistakes. Whoever is first in an edition, whoever is read far above the median of the other editions and the first five of each edition were checked against their article and, for citizenship, against a source outside Wikipedia; among the rest of the top tens, the doubtful cases were checked. Not counted: 17 citizenships and nine birthplaces (four of them also among those above) that no source found could confirm, for instance Harvey Keitel's citizenship (the source in Wikidata was about the title of honorary citizen of the commune of Leordina) and the birthplace of three Armenians entered as born in Galați although their articles give Ganja, in Azerbaijan (Gandzak in Armenian, Kirovabad in Soviet times). Also removed: seven events that Wikidata misplaces or that took place in several countries, among them the solar eclipse of 11 August 1999. The whole list, with the reason for each correction, is in the file corrections.csv below. For people born in Bessarabia or northern Bukovina between 1918 and 1940, the list keeps Kingdom of Romania citizenship only where Wikidata records it. For Vlad the Impaler no document records the birthplace; Sighișoara is a historians' hypothesis, which Wikidata follows.

What was counted. Monthly views of each article from the Wikimedia Pageviews API (the “user” class, all access types), for 135 months, from July 2015, the first month available, to September 2026. Complete series were downloaded for 1,271 people: everyone with an article in at least 16 editions of Wikipedia, whichever they are, and, in addition, anyone who in September 2026 was among the fifty most-viewed people in one of the 43 editions on the starting list, before the exclusions and corrections above (found in Wikimedia's complete monthly file). That makes 20,915 series. The rankings are rankings of these people: someone with articles in few languages, read heavily years ago in a single edition and little in September 2026, can be missing.

The two measures. “Per million” divides the article's views by all the views of the edition in the same months and multiplies by a million. “Against other editions” divides that number by the median for the same person in the other editions that have the article (at least eight); it is computed only for the top ten of each edition, and only on the views of the article's current title, without redirects, so that every edition is measured the same way. An edition in which no name reaches 1.5 appears without a portrait in the wall's second view.

Limits. These are 43 editions out of Wikipedia's more than 300. An article moved to a new title keeps its old views under the old title; redirects were added only for the names shown, not for everyone on the starting list. The year 2015 has six months here and 2026 has nine.
