December 1989: Twelve Days, from Timișoara to Târgoviște
15th: the first demonstrations in Timișoara; 21st: the Bucharest rally breaks; 22nd: the helicopter at 12:06, the army under the CFSN from 16:00; 25th: the Târgoviște trial and execution. The tolls, from a wartime 60,000 to six accountings: 689, 1,200＋, 1,104 (162＋942), 862/2,150, 760＋ — each with source and scope.

14 December — Iași · Iași: the Union Square gathering
A gathering in Iași's Union Square, repressed by the Securitate. The state institute's chronology dates it a day before Timișoara: the first pin lands in Moldavia, not Banat.
The only one of the twelve days' events off the Timișoara–Bucharest axis.

15 December — Timișoara · Timișoara: the first demonstrations
The first anti-regime demonstrations break out in Timișoara; within days a mass revolt, and the forces of order open fire. The spark: parishioners gathered at the Reformed parish of pastor László Tőkés against his eviction.
The eviction case is documented from court and parish archives (Mioc 2002, cited by the Presidential Commission).

16 December — Timișoara · Timișoara: the street takes over
Protests grow into street clashes. 16 December opens the conduct interval the 2019 indictment assigns to Ceaușescu, Vlad (the DSS chief) and Postelnicu (the interior minister): 16–22 December.
16 December is day one of the indictment's pre-22nd repression window.

17 December — Timișoara · Timișoara: crackdown, and a flight to Iran
Before leaving for Iran, Ceaușescu convenes the Executive Committee: the defendants' later testimony says he demanded more force, rebuked Postelnicu, and 22,000 Patriotic Guards were sent to Timișoara. That same morning Deputy Prosecutor-General Diaconescu arrives there.
Defence minister Milea's conduct interval starts on the 17th (PÎCCJ).

18 December — Timișoara · Timișoara: counting the dead
Prosecutors sent from Bucharest (Greblea, Petrescu) join the locals at the morgue for autopsies; interrogation of detainees continues.

19 December — Timișoara · Timișoara: interrogations continue
Interrogation of detainees continues, at the prison and at militia headquarters.
The next day, every file the prosecutors held is seized by the county militia's penal-research chief (the Memorial's study).

20 December — Timișoara · Timișoara: the emissaries fail
Emil Bobu is sent to Timișoara to calm the demonstrators and finds it impossible. He reports 57 dead to Elena Ceaușescu and proposes sending some bodies to Bucharest for cremation — all from his later testimony in court.
The exact text and body of the “free city” proclamation did not verify in the captured sources — this page omits it (see method).

21 December — Bucharest · Bucharest: the rally breaks
The rally on the Central Committee balcony, staged to back Ceaușescu, turns into a demonstration against him; his shock shows on television. In the evening, a barricade in University Square; that night, the young protesters in the square are massacred.
On the night of the 21st, Postelnicu and Dincă are out in Bucharest urging soldiers to take “firm measures”; Dincă assumes full responsibility (military witness).

22 December — Bucharest · Bucharest: the fall
The crowds block the streets and storm the Central Committee HQ; the Ceaușescus flee by helicopter from the roof, bound for Snagov, and are arrested the same day. Also on the 22nd, an emergency Executive Committee: Ceaușescu asks whether anyone opposes the measures under way.
12:06 is the end of the Ceaușescu interval in the indictment; from 16:00 the army ＋ Interior–Securitate ＋ Patriotic Guards pass under CFSN command; in the evening the diversions begin.

23 December — Otopeni · Otopeni: the night of friendly fire
In the night of 22/23, interference with the defence plan of Otopeni airport kills 48 (40 soldiers ＋ 8 civilians) and gravely wounds 15. On the 23rd, the order to change the cockades on the Boteni 61st Regiment helicopters draws friendly fire.
Both acts are charged to General Rus, the air-force commander (indictment charges; the presumption of innocence applies).

24 December — Bucharest · Christmas Eve: between arrest and trial
Clashes continue under CFSN military command (the indictment's intervals run to 31.12); the Ceaușescus, arrested on the 22nd, wait at Târgoviște for the next day's tribunal.
The 24th is the thinnest-documented of the twelve days: no captured source gives an hour-by-hour record.

25 December — Târgoviște · Târgoviște: the trial and the execution
The execution follows. This page records the procedure and the archival positions, without gory detail.
An extraordinary military tribunal, in the barracks: genocide (art. 356), armed attack on the people and state power (art. 163), destruction ＋ undermining the economy (arts. 165, 145). Prosecution and sentence: death ＋ total confiscation; execution the same day; the announcement on television.
Ceaușescu does not recognise the court: “I will only answer before the Grand National Assembly.”

Three disputes: each in two versions
Who shot after the 22nd, how legal the Târgoviște trial was, who ordered the 17th at Timișoara: the contemporary position beside the later record from the files, each passage sourced at its end.
Who was shooting after 22 December?
A · The contemporary position. Television warns of “terrorists”; CFSN leaders appear on air and issue communiqués. The indictment files the appearances as direct disinformation.
B · The later position, from the files. The 2019 indictment: the diversions were deliberately induced; the “terrorism psychosis” produced friendly fire, chaotic shooting, contradictory orders; after the 22nd: 862 dead, 2,150 wounded.

How legal was the Târgoviște trial?
A · The contemporary position. The tribunal's record: guilt on four counts (genocide among them), death ＋ confiscation, execution the same day, the TV announcement.
B · The later position, from the files. Three institutions agree: the Presidential Commission — “a mock trial”; the 2019 indictment — “a simulated criminal trial”; the IICCMER chronology — “a flash trial”.

17 December at Timișoara: who ordered it?
A · The contemporary position. The defendants, in court (Jan 1990): Ceaușescu wanted more force; Postelnicu relayed the 22,000 Guards order; the counties sent troops.
B · The later position, from the files. In the same trial, Postelnicu says he personally shot and tortured no one; Dincă, that the repression was not his direct responsibility.
Both are testimony from the same trial (Helsinki Watch, Jan 1990).

Decree-Law 2 (the CFSN), 3 (the amnesty, signed Iliescu), 6 (abolishing the death penalty); the trial of the four (Jan 1990), the 2019 indictment, Romania's ECHR conviction (2011). Procedural stages only, no findings of guilt.

Amnesties political crimes since 30.12.1947; applies to acts up to 22.12.1989 inclusive; signed Ion Iliescu.

The death penalty is abolished and replaced with life imprisonment; final unexecuted sentences are commuted.
Jan 1990: four former aides (Postelnicu, Bobu, Dincă, Mănescu) tried for genocide, testimony limited to 17–22 Dec; at Timișoara the trial of 21 Securitate officers opens (Helsinki Watch). The 5.04.2019 indictment (11/P/2014, 12 vols/3280 pages, 3330-vol file): Iliescu, Voiculescu, Gen. Rus sent to trial for crimes against humanity (procedural stage; presumption of innocence). ECHR, 24.05.2011: ineffective investigation, Article 2 breach.

- The days: the PÎCCJ releases (12:06, 16:00, 862/2,150, the 48 and the rest), the Final Report's December passage (the broken rally, the University night, the helicopter, the mock trial, 1,104 ＝ 162＋942), the IICCMER chronology (14/15/22/25), Helsinki Watch (the 17th CPEx, the 21st night, Bobu's 57 ＋ cremation, the emergency CPEx, 689/1,200), the Memorial's studies (the 17–20 prosecutors, the 46 reports, the press 60,000), the broadcast transcript (four counts, non-recognition).
- The tolls: six rows, six distinct accountings, not six wordings of one truth; the Jan 1990 689 is unproven (the observers' wording), the 2019 862 counts only the charged acts. Press citing official statistics (1,142/3,136) stays out of the table: the full text was never captured.
- Missing: the “free city” proclamation text; a full per-city toll (only Otopeni's 48 and what pins down); an hour-by-hour 24th; archival photographs (rights unclear); the other, unverified takeoff time (the indictment gives 12:06, which this page keeps).
- Wording: indicted people appear with procedural stage only, under the presumption of innocence; the page covers Romania only, with no cross-country comparisons.
