Dragonul Roșu: Bucharest's Chinese wholesale city
In 1995 Romania exported $179m to China and imported $90m — still a surplus; in 2024 it imports $8,509m and exports $780m. Meanwhile, east of Bucharest, Dragonul Roșu grew from its first hall to 10 pavilions on 63 hectares. This page sets the two lines side by side: what happened in each year, what share each cargo holds, where every total comes from.

2024: eight cargo chapters

The market: ten pavilions
From Dragonul 1 (2003) to Casa Design and the Oriental: each pavilion's area, shops and categories come from the operator's pages; the shops add to 3,713, “spaces” count separately. A schematic with no scale; check the official site before the trip.
The operator's position (own site): Niro member, founded 2003, 63 ha, 10 pavilions, 250,000+ sqm, 4,500+ spaces, 4,000 parking places, 60%+ of the wholesale market (self-declared), 20,000+ daily clients, rail ＋ road to Constanța port. The pavilion pages' shops add to 3,713 (this page's sum; “spaces” ≠ “shops”).

The traders: three sourced claims
From the Europa center to the Red Dragon Market. Li Minghuan 2019 (Mappemonde, 2011–12 Romania fieldwork): in Bucharest, “from the Europa center to the Red Dragon Market”, much real estate sat in Romanian hands; both Chinese markets belonged to Niro (Romanian capital); Niro kept rewriting rents and pushing wholesalers into new units, so the Chinese wholesalers founded the “Tangrenjie Realestate Group”, about €1bn into a 250,000 sqm, 200+ shop market, caught by the debt crisis. The operator calls itself a Niro member — the ends meet.
Timeline: eight markers
From the 1990s Europa center to $8.5bn in 2024: every marker carries a date and a source, totals and market facts interleaved. In 2020, the pandemic year, imports rose — so say the data; on closures no citable report existed, and this page omits it.
The 1990s: the Europa center
The first Chinese wholesale concentration, at Bucharest's Europa center; the study: “from the Europa center to the Red Dragon Market”.
1995: Romania's surplus
$179m exported to China, $90m imported — the only surplus year in the 30-year series (Comtrade).
2003: the opening
Dragonul Roșu opens (the operator); imports from China: $662m (Comtrade).
2007: the EU and Dragonul 3
An EU member since 1 January (europa.eu); the footwear pavilion opens; imports $2,285m.
2008: the import leap
Imports from China jump 53% to $3,506m (Comtrade).
2011–12: Tangrenjie
Chinese wholesalers found the Tangrenjie group: about €1bn, 250,000 sqm, 200+ shops; the debt crisis catches it (Li 2019, 2011–12 fieldwork).
2020: the pandemic without a fall
$5,745m imported, above $5,095m in 2019 (Comtrade). On any market closure, the captured sources hold no citable report — this page omits it.
2024: $8.5bn and the building site
$8,509m imported, $780m exported (Comtrade); the Dragonul 1 modernisation under way (the operator).

The official address form, the phone, the hours, the free shuttle — all copied from the operator's site. The STB lines and travel time sit on the transport page as images; this page never captured them and omits them.

How many Chinese? How many Chinese? This page gives no headcount: the census asks ethnicity, not citizenship, and the small-ethnicity tables were never captured; the IGI page lists monthly activity bulletins, not stocks by nationality; press accounts cite each other, with no primary source. What is not known is not written.
The mirror check. 2024: China reports $9,333m exported to Romania (Romania: $8,509m imported, ＋9.7%); China reports $4,118m imported from Romania (Romania: $780m exported, 5.3×). Mirror gaps come from re-exports, third-country routing, valuation and timing; this page leads with Romania's reports.
The scope note. Deviation note: Eurostat's DS-045409 is Data-Browser-only, with no verified API or bulk endpoint; API dataflows with member-state × partner detail do not exist at capture time; the cross-check uses the China-reported mirror, not Eurostat. Stated here, not hidden.

- Trade: Romania's 30-year reports, two flows a year, every value checked against the frozen Comtrade snapshot; the deficit subtracts the two; chapter shares are computed here, from the snapshot; the mirror uses China's reports (2024: China's exports to Romania 9.7% above Romania's imports from China; China's imports from Romania 5.3× Romania's exports to China — re-exports and routing).
- Eurostat was meant to be the check, but DS-045409 lives only in the Data Browser, with no verified API or bulk endpoint, and API dataflows with member-state × partner detail do not exist — the check moves to the mirror, with the deviation stated here (see the scope note).
- The market: areas, shops and categories come from the operator's 11 pages, in Romanian, translated here; “largest”, “60%” are self-declarations, marked as such. Community history comes from a single study, Li 2019, with no second voice.
- Missing: the Chinese headcount (the census asks ethnicity, not citizenship, and the small tables were never captured; IGI gives monthly bulletins, not stocks); STB lines and travel time; closures; the online shock (no report about this market).
