Birds of the Delta: Seasons, Species, and Ethics

What can you see in which month? Spring passage for sandpipers and gulls, Apr–Jul breeding colonies of pelicans (from afar only), the longest window in autumn, Nov–Feb for the red-breasted goose. 24 cards with windows only — the count vintage expired, so no headcounts.

From BirdLife DataZone 24400 (RO081, fetched 2026-09-18) + ARBDD official routes and visitor Q&A. Birds fly; sightings are never promised.

Three sentences first: windows are BirdLife-sense (breeding/passage/wintering), months a coarse split; routes are access, not promise, spots from guides; breeding season is nesting-sensitive, signed colonies from afar only.

Birds fly: windows are BirdLife-sense, sightings never promised. Count vintage 1990–2006, expired, so this page writes no headcounts.

The season wheel: I go in month X, what do I see?

Pick a month; the sorter returns the window + bird list; every output carries the honesty note. Full text on paper too: wheel, cards, plans below.

Three trip plans: by month, each with non-promises

Long weekend, one week, wintering: where to sleep, which routes, which waves. Each sketch lists its non-promises at the end — read those first.

S1 · Long weekend (May): breeding opens

Base in Tulcea, two full days: one water day (route 1 or 2, toward Mila 23–Crișan) for pelicans, cormorants, herons; one land day D2 (Caraorman forest) for rollers, red-footed falcons. May is full breeding, nesting-sensitive. No promises: approaching colonies; any particular species; boat timetables (the sibling page).

Source ARBDD routes + BirdLife

S2 · One week (September): autumn passage

Base in Crișan or Sulina, mixing water routes 9/13/14 with beach legs D6/D7: passage sandpipers, gulls, terns. September is the autumn window (Aug–Oct); daily fluctuation is normal. No promises: flock sizes; rarities; lodging and tickets (the sibling page).

Source ARBDD routes + BirdLife

S3 · Wintering (January): the red-breasted goose window

Base in Tulcea or Murighiol, toward routes 5/6 for lagoon winterers: red-breasted geese, white-fronts, diving ducks, swans. January is the wintering window (Nov–Feb); flocks move daily, ice dictates. No promises: the red-breasted goose (vulnerable, mobile flocks); sailing on ice; exact spots (ask local guides).

The ethics box: six rules for watching right

Permit, routes, tents, colonies, guide, playback. The first four paraphrase reserve rules; the last two state their source or its absence.

E1 · Permit first

Entering the reserve needs the ARBDD visitor permit (ORD 610/2009): online, SelfPay, info centers, SMS TUR1; children and students free but still permitted. Sept 2026 Q&A, Q1–3.

Source ARBDD visitor Q&A / routes

E2 · Official routes only

24 official routes (15 water + 9 land); tourism follows them: water by boat, land on foot or by car. Routes page, 2021 edition, re-check before departure.

Source ARBDD visitor Q&A / routes

E3 · Tents and cars

Tents and caravans only in authorized campsites; cars only on public roads, parking only in designated spots, none near banks and reeds. Q&A Q8–9 — read before chasing birds by car.

Source ARBDD visitor Q&A / routes

E4 · Colonies from afar

The reserve signs its strictly protected zones and colonies; the distance on the sign is the law, this site invents no figures. In breeding season (Apr–Jul) nesting-sensitive; flagged species from afar only.

Source ARBDD visitor Q&A / routes

E5 · Guide or solo

The water maze + colonies that move yearly: a local guide earns its fee — this site's suggestion, not law. Solo goers leave route and return time at their lodging, boats only with licensed operators.

Source ARBDD visitor Q&A / routes

E6 · Playback and feeding

Whether playback is banned: this site never caught the SOR/ARBDD text (sor.ro 403s automated reads), so it writes nothing; default to no playback, no feeding — this site's suggestion, ask your guide or SOR.

Sibling: logistics to the Delta logistics page

Permits, boats, lodging, timetables belong to the site's Delta logistics page (with a Chinese edition); this page is only birds + seasons + ethics. Mutual links, separate subjects.
