How Bucharest streets compare

On half of the 3,830 measured streets, under 25% of pixels are dense green. The median NDVI is 0.298; the dense-green threshold is 0.4.

The greenest street is Strada Tomis: 83% dense green, across 22 addresses. The greyest is Strada Constantin Bosianu: 0%, across 23 addresses. And Smârdan, in the Old Town, also 0%, across 72 addresses.

The numbers come from a single clear day, 22 August 2026. The satellite's green is vegetation's spectral signal, not counted trees: lawns and weeds read green, mineral plazas read grey.

What the green means#

NDVI is an index of red and infrared, between −1 and 1: asphalt sits below 0.2, dense vegetation passes 0.4. Every street, park and map cell is coloured by its mean; the bands are the same everywhere.

A pixel is 10 metres: one pixel holds tree, lawn and pavement at once. That is why the page talks about green, not trees.

The 0.4 threshold is this analysis's cut: on this page, “dense green” means pixels with NDVI ≥ 0.4. Interpretation guides give wide bands, so every ranking sits beside the raw mean.

How the number is made#

Each street takes its green from around its addresses: 25-metre discs around every point in the index, clear pixels only, no clouds and no cloud shadows. The mean is mean NDVI; the share is the fraction of pixels above 0.4.

The day is 22 August 2026, a nearly cloud-free Sentinel-2 pass: 99.64% of pixels are clear. The bands used are red and near-infrared, at 10 metres; the cloud classification comes at 20 metres.

A street with under 3 addresses gets no number; rankings keep only streets with at least 20 addresses. 1,048 streets stayed unmeasured — they show as such, not as zero.

Limits: the satellite sees vegetation's signal, not trees — crops, lawns and weeds read green. A 10-metre pixel mixes everything it catches: tree, lawn, pavement. And it is a single August day: after a rainy week, the lawns would read differently.
