Hours to Kill at Bucharest Airport? Stay or Go: OTP Transit, Entry, City

Connecting at Bucharest? First check whether your itinerary allows you to reach the next flight, then work out whether there is time for the city. This guide is for ordinary Chinese passport holders arriving from outside Schengen.

Rules come from the MFA visa pages; distances are measured; in-terminal items are unverified and unwritten.

Visa-free airport transit is possible only for an onward flight outside Schengen and a confirmed transfer that stays in the international zone. Another Schengen airport or landside bag collection involves Schengen entry. Check the documents before travel, even if you plan to remain at the airport.

Can you reach the next flight, and is there time for the city?

Enter the exact duration and check the itinerary. The calculation deducts two hours to be back at OTP, one hour for travel and an extra hour if you recheck bags. A three-hour layover without a bag recheck leaves zero minutes.

This guide requires at least one hour left for a visit. That is an editorial threshold, not a guarantee: disembarkation, border queues, transport waits and delays take extra time. CNAB gives trains about every 40 minutes and a journey of about 20 minutes. Check real timings and gate closure.

Border-control time, where required, including any EES processing, is not included in this result. It also excludes deplaning, queues, transport waits and delays.

Before leaving the airport

This table assumes valid entry entitlement, a confirmed itinerary and through-checked bags. Deduct an extra hour for a bag recheck. Without those confirmations, check before travel.

Without a visa or other entry entitlement: only a confirmed transfer outside Schengen with no border crossing allows you to remain in international transit. A flight to another Schengen airport, including one in Romania, or landside bag collection requires checking entry documents. Do not assume that separate tickets permit an airside transfer.

International transit and Schengen entry

For an ordinary Chinese passport, exemption from an airport transit visa at OTP applies to an eligible international-zone transfer with the next flight outside Schengen. A flight to another Schengen airport involves Schengen entry at Bucharest, even if you stay at the airport. Generally, a valid Schengen visa or another applicable entry entitlement is required; a visa does not guarantee admission at the border. Confirm the transfer, bags and documents separately with the authorities and airline.

EES: what does it mean for your transfer?

Fully operational since 10 April 2026, the EU Entry/Exit System (EES) records travel-document details, entries, exits and biometric data for most non-EU travellers making short stays in Schengen; some categories are exempt. EES does not grant entry rights or replace a visa. For short-stay visa holders, fingerprints collected for the visa are already held in the Visa Information System (VIS) and are not stored again in EES; EES still records a facial image. If your airline confirms a transfer that stays entirely in the international transit area to a flight outside Schengen, you do not cross the Schengen external border at OTP. Leaving for Bucharest or connecting to another Schengen airport means entering Schengen at OTP; check your entry documents and transfer with the airline and authorities.

Airport transit visa: China is on neither list

Common list, 12 states (Afghanistan, Bangladesh, DR Congo, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Ghana, Iran, Iraq, Nigeria, Pakistan, Somalia, Sri Lanka); Romania adds 11 (Egypt, India, Lebanon, Palestine, Morocco, Nepal, Tunisia, Yemen, Syria, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan). China is on neither: single-airport transit airside at OTP needs no ATV. ATV never permits leaving the transit zone (not even overnight); an onward flight to another Schengen airport or a landside transfer requires applicable entry entitlement, generally a type-C visa.

Entry needs a visa: China is listed at no. 22

MAE Annex 1 (Regulation EU 2018/1806): Chinese passports enter Romania with a visa. Leaving the airport = entry: a Schengen short-stay visa is needed (rules in the short-stay guide, not repeated here). Holders of a valid uniform visa / long-stay visa / residence permit are exempt from ATV (MAE exemption clause, full text on the method page).

Three legs: train, bus, taxi

Train data comes from the official CFR page (2026-09-18); CNAB and TPBI confirm route 100 and the 3 lei/90-minute metropolitan fare, checked 16 October 2026. The stop is temporarily at Departures.; the taxi figure is a computation, never a quote. Distances are OSRM-measured, no traffic.

Train: Gara de Nord ⇄ OTP, 20–25 minutes, 6.50 lei

CFR runs daily Gara de Nord – OTP (some stop at Parc Mogoșoaia / Patinoar). Flat 6.50 lei: ticket office (until 3–5 min before), site/app (until departure), Kiosk (5 min), contactless POS on board, SMS 7458 (30-min validity).

Bus 100: airport–Piața Unirii, day and night

Route 100 links Henri Coandă Airport with Piața Unirii 2 around the clock. CNAB gives intervals of about 15 minutes by day and 30 minutes at night. A metropolitan journey costs 3 lei and is valid for 90 minutes; contactless bank-card payment is available. During the works, routes 100 and 442 stop only in front of the Departures Terminal; the Arrivals stop is suspended. No reopening date is confirmed here. Check airport signs before leaving.

Taxi: 18.8 km → about 26–66 lei (computed)

OSRM measures OTP→University Square 18.8 km / 29 min (2026-09-18). The PMB band verified at the monthly budget guide (approved max 3.5 lei/km, practiced 1.39–1.40) multiplied: 18.8×[1.39, 3.50]=[26.1, 65.8] lei. Flag-fall excluded (the monthly budget guide's caveat inherited); traffic adds more. A computation, not a quote.
