Historia says the station was named Lujerului because it is near the street and underpass of that name. A 'lujer' is a slender plant stem or young shoot. Why the street bears this name is not clear.

Earlier names

• Armata Poporului 1983 – 2009

Armata Poporului ('People's Army') was the communist-era name of the boulevard above the station, later renamed Iuliu Maniu.

Worth knowing

• The communist-era name survived almost 20 years after 1989, partly due to Metrorex's reluctance to rename stations.
• The Lujerului underpass, opened on 4 July 1987, is 800 m long, 400 m of it covered.
• It has a central marble platform in white, crimson and greys.
