Where the name comes from

1 Mai (May Day) Boulevard, the former name of Ion Mihalache Boulevard.
The station sits where Ion Mihalache Boulevard (formerly 1 Mai) meets Calea Griviței, at Chibrit (Clăbucet) Square. The name was taken from the boulevard's former name, a controversial choice: many locals associate '1 Mai' with the 1 Mai Market almost 3 km away, and another boulevard in western Bucharest was already called 1 Mai.
Worth knowing
- It was the M4 terminus until 1 July 2011.
- It will be the starting station of M6 to Otopeni Airport; works began on 15 December 2023.
- It is considerably taller than the other stations of the Gara de Nord – 1 Mai section.
- The walls, originally blue, were repainted yellow and navy; water seepage persists.
