Petrache Poenaru (1799–1875), engineer and educator, who patented a reservoir pen in Paris in 1827.

Poenaru patented in Paris in 1827 a self-filling 'portable pen', an ancestor of the fountain pen, and was one of the organisers of Romanian education. The name was chosen in 2009 because the Politehnica campus and the Regie halls are nearby.

Semănătoarea was the nearby agricultural machinery factory, the western end of the first section.

Worth knowing

• The rename took effect on Saturday 4 July 2009, together with seven other stations.
• It was a terminus until December 1984, when the line was extended to Crângași.
• The branch to the Ciurel depot leaves next to the station.
• On 19 November 1979 a train carrying passengers left Ciurel depot for Semănătoarea station.
