Until 1868 building was forbidden within 500 Klafter (948 m) of the fortifications of Timișoara, in western Romania. On a map of the Roman world, the Latin stones of Mithras light up in the years they could have been carved: by the year 100 none can be securely dated, and they become numerous only after 150, when the story of the Magi is already written.

Dimitrie Cantemir, prince of Moldavia (a principality whose land is now in Romania, the Republic of Moldova and Ukraine), drew a map of his country in Russia after he had lost his throne. It names 785 towns, monasteries and villages. 269 have been identified and set here beside their true places: how far off each one is, which way, and what the too-wide shape of the country can and cannot be put down to.
A friend, Lucian Roșu, sent nineteen look-alike words and asked how many words today come from one old root. Counted on Wiktionary’s own family trees, about 2,277 words in 219 languages descend from, or were borrowed out of, roots that begin with sk- and mean to cut, split or scrape. Seven of his words trace to these roots, seven are impostors, five are open.
Of 15 pairs, one: Costești-Cetățuie and Blidaru, neighbours 1.6 km apart. In the other 14 the mountain rises at least 100 m above the straight line. From the capital, Sarmizegetusa Regia, none of the other five fortresses can be seen, even from a 12 m tower. A chain of posts in between remains possible; the positions known do not show one.

Halley’s Comet passed the far point of its orbit on 8 December 2023 and is heading back to the Sun, which it rounds on 28 July 2061. The page follows the whole orbit by scroll, 1986 to 2061, on NASA JPL positions: of 27,563 days, the comet spends 78 closer to the Sun than Earth is and 35 years farther out than Neptune. Each point of the picture is a ray of light followed through curved space with the equations of general relativity, over NASA’s map of 1.7 billion stars. Half of the city’s postcodes have a mapped pub within 286 m in a straight line, and the official count of pubs and bars fell from 4,835 in 2001 to 3,525 in 2024, with Hackney the only borough that rose. Twenty-four rules, each a documented sound change, get forty Romanian words out of their Latin etymons. The reader picks them and applies them, and the order changes the outcome: caballum gives cal if the double consonant stays intact until the l between vowels has changed, and car if it is simplified too early. Every intermediate form on the page is produced by the rule engine rather than written by hand. The same rules, given an independent list of 660 words that Wiktionary records as inherited directly from Latin, produce exactly the Romanian form for 152 of them.
The European survey on income and living conditions asks, every few years, whether you have a relative, friend or neighbour outside your household you could ask for help. In 2022, 293 people in 1,000 in Romania said no — the highest share of the 33 countries; the Union average is 112 and Norway's is 24.
