The Moon has 5,185 confirmed impact craters wider than 20 kilometres. Earth, despite taking more hits per square kilometre, has only 52. An explorer with 70 real craters, from 200 years old to 2.229 billion years old.
Romania writes more public holidays into law than any other EU country, seventeen of them. On average five a year land on a Saturday or a Sunday. Compare twenty-eight national calendars and see what one rule would change.
Spin in a chair and stop dead: you feel a rotation that isn't there. Keep turning instead, and the sensation disappears entirely — an interactive physical model of the inner ear shows why, and how a pilot ends up in a graveyard spiral believing they're flying straight.
Romania holds Europe’s highest homeownership rate (95.3%) alongside its most overcrowded dwellings (40.5%), with just 1.1 rooms per person. A sociological investigation into the 1990 mass privatization, mortgages melted by hyperinflation, and the concrete flat drafted as a private welfare state of last resort.
The anthropology of death, sorted by question: who may touch the body, whether the name may still be spoken, how long mourning lasts, where the spirits go, whether what relatives do after a death changes the afterlife. Every answer comes from the 186 dated societies of the Standard Cross-Cultural Sample and 137 Austronesian cultures in Pulotu, with the number coded beside every count and the uncoded societies drawn into the same figure. Then every society's record, a map, 21 cases read at their dates, 12 theoretical arguments and the questions nobody has coded.
Anthropologists described 1,291 societies and coded every record under the same headings. The atlas sorts them by 54 everyday questions: who gives wealth to whom at a marriage, who inherits the land, where a baby sleeps, what is done with the bones. Three lenses (answer, region, language family), ten rare possibilities and a game: in which societies did people live most differently from what feels normal to you.
Between the day a woman leaves her parents’ house and the day she marries, a Swede has 12.6 years, a Romanian 3.1, and a Croatian minus seven months: she marries before she moves out. The line John Hajnal drew in 1965 from Saint Petersburg to Trieste still captures 95% of the marriage pattern and only 60% of the household one, because the household axis has rotated sixty degrees and now divides north from south. An instrument that rotates the line across 36 countries.
A buttered slice toppling off a table edge is already spinning when it leaves. At ordinary table height, ≈0.75 metres, the fall gives it almost exactly 180°, so it lands butter-side down.
Intact human skin acts as a living bioelectric battery maintaining a 20 to 50 millivolt transepithelial potential. A cut short-circuits the barrier, generating a 100–200 V/m lateral electric field that guides keratinocytes directly to the wound bed via electrotaxis.
A fist at arm's length covers ten degrees of sky — the amateur astronomer's rule. The same ruler, turned on your own eye, finds a real gap in your vision: 6.28 degrees wide, over twelve times wider than the full moon. The instrument lets you measure your own angle, with one eye.
In the classic study of eight men, stature varied by a mean 19.3 mm, with 80% of the loss occurring in the first 3 hours after getting up. Measure your morning-to-evening difference and see an illustrative even-share value across 23 intervertebral discs.
Ice cream eaten in under 5 seconds causes headaches 2.2 times more often than eaten over 30 (27.4% vs 12.5%, 145 schoolchildren). A second study, with transcranial Doppler on 77 adults, shows why the pain lands in your forehead, not your mouth.
Between Norwegian women born in 1936-1939 and those born in 1960-1964, age at menarche fell by 0.18 years. Age at menopause rose by 2.42 years — roughly thirteen times more, according to a 2020 study of 312,656 women.
An ordinary sink drains in about thirty seconds. For Earth's rotation to dominate the water's motion, you need nearly three hours of perfect stillness — more than three hundred times longer. Pick a latitude and see the real Coriolis parameter, the time it needs, and why the reversed-hemisphere drain myth never shows up at home.
The enlarge button on any photocopier, from A4 to A3, reads 141%. That number is the square root of two, and it is why paper sizes A0 through A10 can keep halving forever without ever changing shape. An interactive explorer of ISO 216 geometry.

At the end of her monograph on the absolute construction, Antonia Ruppel describes teaching Latin and hearing herself explain the ablative absolute exactly as it had been explained to her at eleven — the method she criticises at the start of the same book. The page begins there: the researcher asks where the construction came from, the teacher asks how to read it. It carries the two pairs of expressions she closes her argument with, from Homer and the Rigveda, with the attribute removable so you can see what is left; the देव- paradigm from her textbook, twenty-four slots filled by seventeen forms; and the vocabulary notes where one root, √युज्, takes three senses across six stanzas of the Bhagavadgītā.
In 2012, Romania's traffic police published the only detailed inventory of the road kilometers where serious crashes kept recurring: 138 black spots, 569 deaths in five years. The worst 19 of them killed 170 people, and seven sit in a single county, Ilfov. The map geocodes all of them, alongside four 2026 PNRR intervention sectors, with a downloadable dataset.
The manuscript of the poem “The Battle of Maldon” burned in 1731. The poem is still read because somebody had copied it out by hand seven years earlier, and who that was is still unsettled. A study in Science measured how often this happens: of the 799 medieval chivalric works that have reached us, 326 are attested by a single manuscript. The page carries a game in which twelve real works each start with one copy and run eight rounds, a calculator showing why the first copies matter most, and a ledger of thirty-two cases, from the letter of Neacșu to the last speaker of Ubykh.
For each of Romania's 3,181 localities, 2014-2022 mortality (adjusted for age and urban/rural mix) compared with the real distance to the nearest functioning hospital. Only 1.1% of the population lives more than 30 kilometres from a hospital, and mortality stays nearly flat out to 15 kilometres — but several towns that do have their own hospital, mostly former mining towns, have mortality up to 54% above expectations.
Romania's 1,256 listed wooden churches do not cover the country: they gather in a ring of hills around the outside of the Carpathians. Between 200 and 500 metres, nearly one locality in ten still has one; on the plain, one in ninety. The same curve rises on both sides of the mountains, and the band sits inside the oak storey of Romanian woodland, whose median altitude is 263 metres against 1,008 for fir and spruce. Of the 186 churches whose wall timber is recorded, 135 are oak — including 11 of 14 in Maramureș, where the popular image is of a fir church.
Twenty-four rules, each a documented sound change, get forty Romanian words out of their Latin etymons. The reader picks them and applies them, and the order changes the outcome: caballum gives cal if the double consonant stays intact until the l between vowels has changed, and car if it is simplified too early. Every intermediate form on the page is produced by the rule engine rather than written by hand. The same rules, given an independent list of 660 words that Wiktionary records as inherited directly from Latin, produce exactly the Romanian form for 152 of them.
The European survey on income and living conditions asks, every few years, whether you have a relative, friend or neighbour outside your household you could ask for help. In 2022, 293 people in 1,000 in Romania said no — the highest share of the 33 countries; the Union average is 112 and Norway's is 24. A few questions later in the same interview, Romania gives the Union's highest rating for trust in other people. The reader answers the question first, then sees where the answer falls. The shortfall does not gather in one group: Romania's richest fifth is worse off than the Union's poorest fifth.
Romania has 87,220 km of public road, and 20,959 of them are gravel or bare earth. Almost all sit on the local network: 99.4% of the unsurfaced kilometres are county or communal roads, where the share is 30.2%, against 0.7% on national roads. A county map, the four surface classes year by year since 2000, and the streets of 319 towns.

712 localities, each with its own tourist year traced month by month from INS TEMPO data, 2023-2025. Nearly a third of all reported nights in Romania fall in July and August alone, yet a clustering algorithm separates localities most cleanly into just two shapes of year: a nearly season-free group (597 localities, including the ski resorts) and a coast-dominated one (115 localities).
Doctors, family doctors, dentists, pharmacies and hospital beds per 10,000 residents, for each of Romania's 3,181 localities, today and twenty years ago. Doctors per 10,000 residents rose from 21.2 in 2004 to 34.0 in 2024, but towns have 56.4 and communes only 5.8; 315 localities lost their last doctor, and 566 have never had a pharmacy or a hospital.
